Professor of Organic Chemistry, Aachen, Germany
2000 - present
In 2000 he obtained his habilitation in bioorganic chemistry and was appointed professor of organic chemistry at the RWTH Aachen University.
His main research activities are in the field of bioorganic chemistry/chemical biology and focus on the development of new molecular tools for functional genomics and proteomics. These tools are mainly based on synthetic S-adenosyl-L-methionine analogues and methyltransferases, a class of enzymes that methylates various substrates like DNA, RNA, proteins and small molecules and serves a broad variety of biological functions ranging from metabolism to epigenetics.
Habilitation, Dortmund, Germany (R. S. Goody)
1993 - 2000
He joined the Department of Physical Biochemistry headed by Prof. Roger Goody, Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund, and started his independent research on structure-function relationships of DNA methyltransferases.
Postdoc, Cambridge, USA (J. Knowles)
1991 - 1993
He worked as postdoctoral fellow in the group of Prof. Jeremy Knowles at the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Harvard University in Cambridge, USA.
Dr. sc. nat., Zürich, Switzerland (S. A. Benner)
1991
He finished his Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Steven Benner at the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry at the ETH Zürich, Switzerland.
Diplom (Chemistry), Berlin, Germany (J. Mulzer)
1986
He studied chemistry at the Free University Berlin.
